Event Details

Competitions are an integral part of the Wells Festival of Literature, with entries increasing every year, and submissions arriving from all over the world. Our poetry competition has been running since the Festival began, and our short story competition since 1994. The entries they attract are mostly of an extremely high calibre.

This year’s International Competitions run 1 April – midnight 30 June 2019. The judges will present the prizes at a ceremony during the Festival in Ritchie Hall, Wells on Sunday 20 October 2019. Immediately preceding this, the shortlisted poets will be invited to read their entries. This special occasion is one of the highlights of the Festival when, for the first time, the winning writers are revealed and rewarded.

This year’s Open Poetry judge is Simon Armitage, an award-winning poet who also writes extensively for television, theatre and radio. A former probation officer, he is Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds and was also elected Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford (2015-2019). He received the 2018 Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. His new poetry collection is Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic
